Parents of the 20 medical and dental students of the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos who were kidnapped last Friday, can now heave a sigh of relief.
Their children have been released and may never think of going through Benue State again.
They were rescued last night in Ntunkon forest in Benue State after one week in captivity.
The budding doctors were abducted in the Otukpo area of Benue State while on their way to the annual convention of the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students in Enugu before they encountered bandits.
The students were said to be travelling in a convoy of two buses and were coming from the northern part of the country when they ran into the ambush at about 5:30 pm.
Their captors had established contact with the victims’ families, demanding a ransom of ₦50 million.
But the Police Force spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi who confirmed the development in a statement said no ransom was paid in the release of the students.
“They were rescued tactically and professionally. We commend the security agencies, locals and Office of the National Security Adviser for their commitment and resilience.” The statement read.
