A 24-year-old man, Abass Olalere, was reportedly killed by a yet-to-be-identified 12-man gang in the Labinkulu community within the Moniya area of Akinyele local government area, Oyo State.
Sources from LEADERSHIP indicate that the gang stormed the victim’s home around 9:48 p.m. on Thursday, killing him in the presence of his wife and their three-month-old son.
A visit to the community on Saturday revealed a tensed environment, with residents gathering in groups to discuss the tragic event.
Omolayo Olalere, the wife of the deceased, recounted the incident to reporters, saying they were together outside around 9:48 p.m. when the gang suddenly invaded their home.
She stated that she did not recognize the attackers and that her late husband had no conflicts with anyone prior to his death.
“We quickly rushed inside the house and locked all the doors, but they broke the door and smashed our windows to get in,” she explained.
“Before they gained entry, one of my senior wives who was outside was brutally beaten and nearly killed. When the attackers came inside, they ordered my husband to cooperate by lying down on the table in the living room,” she added.
She said that as he complied, the attackers began assaulting him with various weapons, including a dagger, axe, knife, broken bottles, and cutlasses, and even used charms to ensure his demise.
“There were 12 of them, and three had their faces covered with masks to avoid identification,” she added.
She further explained that after the attackers left, they rushed him to Cureland Hospital in Moniya, where he was referred to another facility. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Friday. The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Station in Moniya.
The deceased’s father, Jelili Olalere, also spoke, expressing his confusion over the incident, as his son was known to be a quiet person.
Olalere added that his son’s body has been deposited in the morgue at Adeoyo Hospital on Ring Road, Ibadan.
