Nigeria’s political landscape is experiencing a remarkable shift, and at the forefront of this transformation stands Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State. In just one year in office, Governor Eno has left an indelible mark, earning him the title of the “new face of Nigerian politics.”
Governor Eno’s leadership style is characterized by unity, empathy, humility, integrity, and prudence. These values guide his decisions and actions, setting him apart as a beacon of hope for the nation. Despite rumors suggesting a potential crossover to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Eno emphasizes that collaboration and cooperation yield democratic dividends. His working relationship with APC political appointees, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reflects his commitment to effective governance.
Governor Eno’s commitment to infrastructure development is evident. Over 280 kilometers of roads are currently under construction, with some already completed and commissioned. His responsive leadership shines through projects like the 1.3-kilometer underground concrete flood control and reconstruction of a section of Atiku Abubakar Way in Uyo. After personally verifying the road’s flood-ravaged state, he swiftly awarded a contract for reconstruction, preventing future damage. Former President Goodluck Jonathan inaugurated the completed road, showcasing Governor Eno’s dedication to improving citizens’ lives.
Governor Eno’s empathy extends to addressing inflation’s impact on citizens. He established the Akwa Ibom Bulk Purchase Agency, launching a Food Voucher scheme. Beneficiaries selected from the updated National Social Register now receive essential food items. Recognizing that this program serves as a temporary solution, Governor Eno has also initiated the “Back to Farm” program, encouraging political leaders and farmers to engage in agri-business.
Governor Eno’s mantra is clear: build from the bottom up and prioritize the poorest of the poor. The ARISE Shelter Initiative exemplifies this commitment. In its first phase, 100 impoverished individuals across the 31 local government areas will receive brand-new 2-bedroom houses, providing shelter and dignity to those in need.
Model Primary Health Centers, equipped with modern facilities, demonstrate Governor Eno’s dedication to rural healthcare. These centers offer consulting rooms, theaters, medical staff quarters, laboratories, and solar-powered electricity. To enhance staffing, 200 more health workers will be recruited. Additionally, the state-of-the-art Dakkada Skills Acquisition Centers (DASAC) empower youth with practical skills in agri-business, woodwork, plumbing, ICT, and tailoring. Governor Eno aims to create self-reliant individuals who contribute to the economy.
In just one year, Akwa Ibom State has witnessed remarkable progress. Governor Umo Eno’s competence, capacity, and character have set a new standard. Describing him as the new face of Nigerian politics is fitting, but perhaps we should also recognize him as “Mr. Performer.” His legacy will undoubtedly shape the future of Nigerian governance.
