Senator Nathan Achonu, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 11 governorship election in Imo State, has expressed his determination to take his case against the affirmation of Governor Hope Uzodinma’s victory to the Supreme Court if necessary.
In a press conference held in Abuja, Achonu expressed his disappointment with the judgment of the Imo State Election Petition Tribunal and vowed to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.
Achonu stated that he received the tribunal’s judgment with sadness and disappointment, as the tribunal dismissed his petition on the grounds that he failed to prove substantial noncompliance with the Electoral Act in the conduct of the election.
The tribunal cited his nonproduction of the BVAS Machine as a reason for the inability to establish noncompliance.
However, Achonu emphasized that the judgment has not shaken his belief in democracy and the judicial process. On the contrary, it has strengthened his resolve to fight for what he believes is right.
He expressed optimism that justice would prevail in the end, as there are still upright, courageous, and incorruptible justices in the judiciary.
Achonu plans to challenge the tribunal’s judgment through the appeal process, going all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary.
He firmly believes that justice will be served and maintains his commitment to upholding the electoral process.
In addition, Achonu intends to seek an order of Mandamus compelling the Attorney General of the Federation to take action against INEC officers and collation/returning officers who have been involved in electoral offenses.
He aims to hold accountable those responsible for electoral misconduct, as he believes their actions contribute to the poverty and insecurity experienced by Nigerians.
Achonu also highlighted instances of intimidation and violence during the election campaign, including an attempted assassination on his life.
Despite these challenges, he and his supporters campaigned tirelessly across all local government areas and wards in Imo State, refusing to be deterred.
Senator Achonu remains determined to pursue his case to the highest level, seeking to recover what he believes is the people’s mandate.
He is confident that the final outcome will not only vindicate his cause but also strengthen the country’s electoral jurisprudence.
