Former Presidential Candidate of the now-defunct National Conscience Party (NCP) in the 2015 General Elections Chief Martin Onovo, believes that only President Bola Tinubu can resolve the current political crisis in Rivers State.
Onovo, who is also an activist and Head of Policy Positions for the Movement for Fundamental Change (MFC), shared his views during an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Lagos.
He emphasized that the political turmoil in the oil-rich state has persisted for too long and requires the president’s intervention to bring it to an end.
thepaan reports that Rivers State has recently experienced political tension due to the ongoing conflict between Wike and Governor Fubara.
According to Onovo, the crisis will be resolved as soon as President Tinubu speaks with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory and former governor of Rivers State, urging him to settle his differences with the current state governor.
“Only Tinubu can stop the political crisis in Rivers. The President just needs to call Nyesom Wike and talk to him. The crisis will stop if Tinubu tells Wike to sheathe his sword,” Onovo stated.
“Wike is working with the President as a minister. I think the President can talk to him and his loyalists in Rivers to maintain peace.
All the President needs to do is tell the former governor to focus on his duties in Abuja and leave the affairs of Rivers to those currently in charge.
That’s all, and Wike will listen. The minister knows what it means not to listen to the President. So, Tinubu can intervene in this matter,” he added.
Onovo also highlighted the issue of godfatherism in politics, describing it as a significant problem that hinders good governance and the delivery of democratic benefits.
He stressed that the political landscape must be cleansed of godfatherism, as it is a major source of instability.
