Alhaji Ado Alhassan Doguwa, Chairman of the Downstream Petroleum Committee in the House of Representatives, emphasized the critical importance of local government autonomy in Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists in Kano on Saturday, Doguwa expressed his concern that the current challenges of insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment in the country stem from the malfunctioning of local government areas.
Donning the attire of a traditional chieftain, Doguwa addressed the controversy surrounding the dissolution of the Kano emirates, stating that it remains a subject of litigation.
He also highlighted the accomplishments of the House in passing significant bills into law, notably the Petroleum Bill, which has elevated Nigeria’s standing in the global petroleum sector.
Reflecting on the positive impact of various enacted laws, Doguwa emphasized the need to go the extra mile to achieve local government autonomy.
He called for the Speaker of the House to chair the Constitutional Review Committee, expressing confidence that together they can bring about the desired change.
Doguwa assured that with full autonomy granted to local governments, Nigerians would regain a sense of security, enabling them to sleep peacefully and move freely without fear of harm or abduction.
The pursuit of local government autonomy is seen as a vital step towards addressing the current challenges facing Nigeria, fostering development, and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
