Police in Kano have arrested a 52-year-old Hamisu Mamuda while trying to smuggle 12 nylon bags of dry leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp into Kurmawa Correctional Centre, Kano.

The drug trade in the ancient commercial city of Kano, law enforcement authorities have successfully dismantled the cartel of the notorious drug dealer known as Badoo. This apprehension comes as a major blow to the criminal network that has long plagued the region with its illicit activities.

The operation culminated in the arrest of Badoo himself, the most wanted drug dealer in the area, as well as eight of his associates.

These arrests mark a crucial milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime in Kano, sending a strong message that criminal enterprises will not go unpunished.

The spokesperson of Kano state Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, who gave the hint on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, said all the suspects are currently in police dragnet as they would be transferred to the Kano Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) upon completion of investigation.

On April 27, 2024, Hamisu’s criminal activities came to a sudden halt when he was apprehended during a botched attempt to sell illicit drugs to inmates at the Kurnawa Correctional Service.

This incident sheds light on the pervasive issue of drug trafficking within correctional facilities, posing significant challenges to the rehabilitation and security of inmates.
He hails from Samegu Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area, Kano State.

The 12 nylon bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp were found wrapped in his jacket. This discovery raises concerns about the potential possession and distribution of illegal substances.

The packaging of the bags in his jacket indicates an attempt to conceal the contents, suggesting a deliberate effort to evade detection. The use of nylon bags for storage is common among illicit drug traffickers due to their durability and ability to conceal odor.

The presence of multiple bags raises suspicions of intent to sell or distribute the substance.

The quantity of bags also indicates a potentially larger operation or network at play.

Police also arrested one Sadam Mu’azu, popularly known as “Badoo” aged 33 years, of Tukuntawa Quarters in Kano Metropolis having received reports of public outcry by Tukuntawa Quarters Kano and adjoining communities over his activities of receiving supply of illicit drugs and cannabis especially from the eastern parts of the country and distributing them to youths, including house wives.

The pursuit of Saddam by law enforcement in Kano as part of efforts to combat illicit drugs and related criminal activities is a critical component of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and its associated negative impacts on society.

Saddam’s presence on the wanted list underscores the severity of the situation and the commitment of authorities to bringing perpetrators to justice.

According to Kiyawa, “the arrest was made was as a result of painstaking surveillance and community partnership initiative of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Usaini Gumel, who instructed dedicated teams of detectives led by Officer-in-Charge of Anti Daba Unit of the Command, SP Hussaini Gimba in conjunction with DPO Sharada Division, CSP Bilyaminu Bello to ensure the arrest of the suspect with all his associates.

While initially driving their illicit activities, ultimately resulted in his apprehension on April 22, 2024, alongside eight accomplices within his network.

The recovered exhibit comprises 11 parcels of dried leaves believed to be Indian Hemp, a cutlass, and five motorcycles utilized for the transportation and distribution of illicit substances.

These items signify a significant seizure in the battle against drug trafficking and related criminal activities.

“The sum of N111,500:00 in different denominations suspected to be proceeds of crime was also recovered. Meanwhile, all the suspects made confessions on their dealings in buying and selling of the drugs and including Indian Hemp.”

“At the completion of investigation all the suspects will be charged to court.”
