The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) in charge of South-West Nigeria, Abiodun Alabi, has emphasiSed the importance of respecting human rights while carrying out police duties.
During his visit to Ekiti State as part of his tour of the South-West Zone, Alabi stressed that professionalism and building a strong relationship with the public are crucial for achieving zero crime rates.
Alabi highlighted the significance of public support in the fight against crime and directed commissioners of police to engage with stakeholders regularly.
He also mentioned the Nigeria Police’s commitment to leveraging Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to combat crime, emphasizing the importance of officer welfare to boost morale.
The DIG’s visit to Ekiti State was part of a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for all DIGs to assess the deployment of resources and the performance of officers across the country.
Alabi emphasized the need for technological advancements in policing, including the use of drones for surveillance and information gathering.
In response, the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Akinwale Adeniran, highlighted the command’s success in reducing crime rates through community policing strategies.
However, he also raised concerns about manpower and logistics challenges, as well as frequent transfers of personnel, appealing to the DIG for support in addressing these issues.
The visit concluded with the DIG paying homage to the Ewi of Ado, Oba Adeyemo Adejigbe, seeking the traditional ruler’s support in the fight against crime in the state.
