The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that at least four individuals died in a tragic car accident on the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway.
Mr. Adeyemi Sokunbi, the Sector Commander of FRSC Enugu State Command, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Enugu.
Sokunbi explained that the accident occurred between 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. on June 11, when a kerosene-laden trailer lost control and collided with six other vehicles. Among the 29 individuals involved in the tragic incident, two died immediately, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.
He further stated that the FRSC utilized the corps’ Intensive Care Unit (ICU) ambulance and other vehicles to transport the 10 injured persons to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu.
He added that the deceased were transported to the morgue at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT) Park Lane, Enugu. Additionally, the commander mentioned that belongings of the victims were found at the accident site.
According to him, the kerosene-laden truck, which lost its brakes, collided with six other vehicles, including cars and a bus, on the reconstructed section of the Enugu-Onitsha Federal Highway.
He expressed gratitude that the truck, despite its brake failure, was not transporting highly flammable petrol. Sokunbi emphasized the importance of caution for motorists and all road users, urging them to ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition before embarking on journeys.
He emphasized the potential danger of operating mechanically deficient vehicles on the road, as they pose risks not only to the driver but also to other road users.
