The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) announced yesterday that it aims to complete the repairs on a significant failing section of the heavily-trafficked Ijora Causeway Road in Apapa Local Government Area by August.

The Ijora Causeway Road, a crucial artery to the Apapa ports, has been in a state of disrepair, hampering businesses and obstructing both pedestrian and vehicle movement. During a project inspection, the agency’s managing director, Engr. Chukwuemeka Agbasi, reported that workers have managed to reclaim land previously submerged by stagnant water.

“This segment of the Ijora causeway is critical. We’re enhancing the road’s existing capacity,” he explained. “In two months, the work will be completed and the road reopened to traffic.”

Commending the Lagos 1 and 11 field offices, the MD emphasized FERMA’s dedication to ensuring the road’s accessibility for all users.

During his inspection tour, the MD also visited the deteriorated sections of Agege Motor Road and Moshalashi in Mushin, as well as the recently repaired Ile-epo Junction on the Abeokuta dual carriageway in Lagos.

Expressing concern over the condition of Mushin Road, exacerbated by poor waste management, he revealed that the agency plans to clear the drainages to improve water flow. “We identified the primary issue as blocked drainage and proposed solutions requiring closer cooperation with the Lagos State Environmental Agency. Our immediate priority is desilting the existing drainages to ensure water flow, as water is the greatest enemy of our roads,” he noted.

At the completed Ile-Epo Road, the MD urged collaboration with the Agbado Oke-Odo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to ensure the road’s maintenance. He cautioned residents against improper waste disposal, highlighting its negative impact on road longevity.

“FERMA has done an excellent job of reclaiming road sections previously used for waste disposal,” he said. “We emphasized the need for closer collaboration with the LCDA to protect and maintain the quality work completed.”
