Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have come under strong criticism from the Adamawa Civil Society Coalition for Peace and the Human Rights Volunteers Network.
The coalition has expressed deep disappointment and concern regarding the exorbitant fee imposed on the local government elections form.
In a statement signed by its convener, Comrade Suleiman A. Abubakar, the coalition denounced the governor and the PDP for setting the purchase fee at a staggering ten million Naira.
They firmly believe that this exorbitant fee is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise potential candidates and undermine the democratic process in the state.
The coalition’s statement reads, “We express our utmost disappointment in Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for imposing an exorbitant fee of ten million Naira for the upcoming local government elections on July 13, 2024. This move clearly aims to prevent potential candidates from participating and poses a significant threat to democracy in Adamawa State.”
Furthermore, the coalition raised concerns about the appointment of PDP members to the Adamawa State Independent Electoral Commission (ASIEC), labeling it as a brazen display of partisanship. They believe that such actions erode trust and confidence in the electoral process, setting a dangerous precedent for the upcoming local government elections in Adamawa State.
In light of these alarming developments, the coalition calls upon human rights groups and other unions to join them in their efforts to hold Governor Fintiri accountable and protect the integrity of the democratic process in Adamawa State.
