The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced the deployment of 743 patrol vehicles, 93 ambulances, 144 motorbikes, and tow trucks to significantly reduce man-made road accidents in Nigeria.
During a press conference at the Kebbi State Command in Birnin Kebbi, State Commander Sabo Maigari highlighted the corps’ readiness for the Sallah festive period and beyond. He identified key causes of road crashes, including overspeeding, drunk driving, route violations, the use of substandard tyres, and driving under the influence of drugs.
He emphasized that the corps strongly opposes the practice of loading humans with animals, a common habit among truck drivers on the country’s highways that frequently leads to crashes and mass fatalities.
However, through sustained awareness campaigns and strict enforcement, the corps has significantly reduced road crashes. This effort has included the arrest of numerous offenders, aided by the Joint Task Force (JTF) and mobile courts for the immediate prosecution of traffic violators nationwide.
The state road safety chief also mentioned that the provided ambulances are intended to transport road accident victims to the nearest hospital for treatment.
Maigari explained that with the support of the Corps Marshal General, Shehu Muhammed, and the cooperation of stakeholders and traditional rulers, Kebbi aims to achieve zero crashes during the Sallah celebrations and beyond.
He expressed gratitude to sister agencies in Kebbi State and affirmed that the Command will continue its efforts to ensure the safety of road users and commuters. He also warned truck drivers to stop causing discomfort to other vehicles by claiming dominance on the road.
Additionally, Maigari mentioned that to combat the issues of overloading and the mixing of humans with animals, the corps has stationed personnel at motor parks to monitor passenger loading and prevent such practices.
