The National Secondary School Education Commission (NSSEC) has launched a comprehensive school rehabilitation program, targeting fifty secondary schools across Nigeria to elevate them to international educational standards. This initiative aims to address the country’s declining senior secondary education sector, as highlighted by the 2024 JAMB examination results, where 76% of candidates scored below 200.

Executive Secretary Dr. Iyela Ajayi announced the program during an inspection of secondary schools in Osun State. The first school visited was CAC High School in Ilesa, which faces significant challenges, including a severe shortage of teachers (only thirteen) and dilapidated infrastructure. Similarly, Laro Grammar School in Osogbo struggles with inadequate facilities and only eight teachers.

The NSSEC plans to select one school from each state for rehabilitation in the first phase, ensuring value for money. This intervention aims to reposition senior secondary education in Nigeria, aligning with the commission’s mandate.

The rehabilitation program will focus on upgrading classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and other essential facilities. This investment in education infrastructure will provide a conducive learning environment, enhancing the quality of education and improving student outcomes.

By addressing the systemic issues plaguing senior secondary education, the NSSEC hopes to reverse the declining trend and equip Nigerian students with the skills and knowledge to compete globally.

As this ambitious project unfolds, it promises to be a beacon of hope for Nigerian education. The NSSEC’s efforts could very well be the turning point that redirects the course of secondary education towards a brighter, more promising horizon.

The successful implementation of this initiative will have far-reaching benefits, not only for the students but also for the nation as a whole. It will foster a more educated and competitive workforce, contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth and development.

The NSSEC’s school rehabilitation program is a vital step towards revitalizing Nigerian education. With its focused approach and commitment to excellence, this initiative has the potential to transform the educational landscape, empowering future generations to reach their full potential.
