Tragedy struck today in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a pregnant woman was swept away by the swollen currents of the Ogun River following a torrential downpour.

The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when the victim, identified as Mrs. Iretioluwa Abosede, attempted to cross a flooded pathway near her home.

According to eyewitnesses, the heavy rainfall, which started late last night and continued into the morning, caused the river to overflow its banks, flooding several adjacent areas.

Mrs. Abosede, who was six months pregnant, was reportedly on her way to church when she slipped and fell into the surging waters.

Despite immediate efforts by local residents to rescue her, the strong currents made it impossible to reach her in time.

Her body was later recovered downstream by local divers who responded to distress calls from the community.

The community has been left in shock and mourning, with many residents lamenting the poor drainage systems and lack of adequate infrastructure to handle such heavy rainfall.

Local authorities have promised to look into measures to prevent future tragedies and improve safety during the rainy season.

Mrs. Abosede is survived by her husband and two young children. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced as the family and community come to terms with this devastating loss.
