Mountain Top University in Ogun State, Nigeria, has achieved the top position in Sustainable Development Goal four (Quality Education) in the country, according to the 2024 World University ranking by Times Higher Education. This recognition by the prestigious global university ranking body highlights the institution’s commitment to providing exceptional education and setting a high standard for others to follow.

In addition to its first-place ranking in SDG 4, Mountain Top University also secured second place in SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), fifth place in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), and fourth place overall in the Impact Rankings. These achievements demonstrate the university’s comprehensive approach to addressing various sustainable development goals and its success in forging effective global partnerships.

The Nigeria Learning Passport, a digital learning platform launched by UNICEF, has reached a significant milestone of one million subscribers. This groundbreaking platform was developed in collaboration with the Federal and State Ministries of Education, as well as key partners such as Microsoft, Airtel, and the Global Partnership for Education. The Nigeria Learning Passport offers over 15,000 curriculum-aligned educational resources, including interactive lessons and digital textbooks, catering to students from primary to secondary education levels.

UNICEF Nigeria Representative, Ms. Cristian Munduate, expressed her satisfaction with the achievement, emphasizing that it is a testament to the collective commitment to ensuring that every child in Nigeria has access to quality education, regardless of their location or circumstances. The platform has been instrumental in bridging the educational gap caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges, providing a safe and supportive environment for children to continue learning.

The Nigeria Learning Passport’s user-friendly interface has made it accessible to learners of all ages. Furthermore, the upcoming offline capability will enable students with limited internet connectivity to access the platform, promoting inclusivity in education.

UNICEF acknowledged the invaluable contributions of its partners in making the Nigeria Learning Passport a success. Airtel was commended for providing data services, IHS Towers for supporting data and connectivity, Microsoft for the platform’s infrastructure, and Sony and Botnar for funding its development and expansion. The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) was also recognized for its funding support.

UNICEF Nigeria pledged to continue working closely with the Federal and State Ministries of Education and other partners to expand the reach of the Nigerian Learning Passport and enhance its content to meet the evolving needs of learners. This milestone represents a significant step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all.
