The All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s accusation that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration was supporting insurgency.
The party also disputed the idea that the federal government was interfering in the Kano Emirate dispute.
Felix Morka, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary, said in a statement on Tuesday that accusing a government that is doing everything it can to restore security of people and property of inciting militants was unjust.
The statement reads in part: “The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to comments allegedly made by Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), accusing the APC-led federal government of attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents in Northern Nigeria.”
He further claimed, without providing any proof, that certain members of the APC were pressuring the federal government to declare a state of emergency in order to retake Kano State.
Kwankwaso’s wild and erratic words were in reference to the ongoing Emirate conflict in Kano.
“We find Kwankwaso’s words unsatisfactory, highly inflammatory, and unacceptable for a person of his status.
As a former Governor and Minister of Defence, we expect Kwankwaso to exercise extreme caution and a deeper understanding of the serious social, political, and security consequences of unguarded statements capable of inciting tension and unrest in Kano.
“It is disturbing that Kwankwaso would so casually accuse the federal government of attempting to create a new breed of Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents, the same Boko Haram that has perpetrated unspeakable and despicable acts of terror that have claimed the lives of innocent citizens and our brave men and women in uniform.
Kwankwaso’s casual use of such a severe claim is excessively inappropriate, unnecessary, and unacceptable.
“In his frenzied effort to strike out, Senator Kwankwaso overlooked the federal government’s obvious neutrality on the emirate situation in Kano from the start.
As a government that thrives on respect for the the rule of law and constitutional liberties, the federal government has confidence in our courts to fairly adjudicate the matter that is already before them, and has no need or reason to side with any of parties in the emir-ship dispute.
“Unguarded accusations like these coming from the highest level of leadership of the NNPP such as that made by the Deputy Governor of the Kano state, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo, against the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, which he has since retracted and apologized for, are utterly unhelpful in the delicate context of Kano, and must be avoided.
“The leader of our Party, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a pan-Nigeria bridge builder for peace, security and unity in our land, and will not, cannot, must not be directly or remotely tainted with flimsy and unjustifiable allegation of promoting violent crisis in any part of our dear country of which he is the President and Commander-in Chief-of the Armed Forces.
“As a statesman, Kwankwaso should focus on investigating and exhausting all possibilities for political and amicable solutions to the royal deadlock rather than increasing the drumbeat of discord and unrest.
“The situation in Kano State requires calm while the country awaits judicial or political settlement of all outstanding issues. The decent people of Kano deserve to live in peace, harmony, and security.”
