The Abia Government has approved the payment of bursaries to 271 state-sponsored students attending various law schools across the country and securing accreditation for 18 courses at Abia University.
This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Mr. Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on Wednesday at the Government House in Umuahia, following the State Executive Council meeting.
Kanu expressed the students’ gratitude for the government’s support, describing the process as rigorous and a testament to the administration’s commitment to improving the education sector.
Kanu also addressed the recent issue of Abia students abandoned in India by the previous administration.
He assured that the government had approved the payment of their school fees, allowing them to continue their education in India.
In sports news, Kanu mentioned that Frank Onyeka, a footballer from Umunneochi Local Government Area who plays for Brentford FC in the United Kingdom and the Super Eagles, has proposed building a football academy in Abia.
The Vice Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Dr. Ahmed Datti, has pledged full support for the project.
The Governor has instructed the Commissioner for Lands and Housing to process a Certificate of Occupancy for the project within 48 hours to encourage Onyeka and signal the state’s readiness to support similar initiatives.
The academy will be strategically located between Umuahia and Aba for easy access.
