The Kano government, under the firm leadership of Governor Abba Yusuf, has taken decisive action by directing the police commissioner to remove the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, from the Nasarawa Palace.
This bold move comes as part of the government’s plan to revitalize the historical palace and usher in a new era for the Kano Emirate.
In a press conference held on Thursday, the attorney general and commissioner for justice, Haruna Dederi, announced the government’s intention to embark on a comprehensive renovation project for the palace.
This endeavor includes the immediate demolition and reconstruction of the decaying walls, symbolizing a fresh start for Kano’s rich heritage.
Mr. Dederi emphasized the significance of a recent ruling by the Kano Division of the Federal High Court, which upheld the validity of the Kano Emirates Council (Repeal) Law of 2024.
He stated, “The court’s ruling has unequivocally reaffirmed the law passed by the Kano State House of Assembly and endorsed by the governor in May 2024.”
Furthermore, Mr. Dederi highlighted the court’s validation of the government’s decision to abolish the five emirates established in 2019, thereby confirming Muhammadu Sanusi II as the rightful Emir of Kano.
He also expressed satisfaction with the court’s acceptance of their application for a stay of proceedings pending the appeal on jurisdiction at the Court of Appeal.
In light of this momentous ruling, the Kano government has instructed the state commissioner of police to remove the deposed Emir of the eight metropolitan local governments from the government property where he is currently “trespassing.” The government will promptly commence the much-needed renovation of the property, signaling a new chapter for the Kano Emirate.
The court’s ruling not only validated the Kano Emirate Council Repeal Law of 2024 but also nullified all actions taken by Governor Abba Yusuf following the law’s passage.
It is worth noting that on May 23, the Kano House of Assembly dissolved the four Emirate Councils created in 2019, while Governor Yusuf dethroned the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and reinstated Muhammad Sanusi II as the new Emir of Kano.
With winds of change blowing through the Nasarawa Palace, the Kano government is determined to restore the glory and heritage of the Kano Emirate, ensuring a prosperous future for its people.
