The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has taken urgent action in response to the recent cholera outbreak, which has claimed the lives of 53 individuals across the country, according to a Monday update from the agency posted on its official platform.
In light of the escalating risk posed by the cholera epidemic, the NCDC has activated the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC). This decision follows a comprehensive assessment of the cholera situation, which has identified Nigeria as being at very high risk for further transmission.
“As of June 24, 2024, a total of 1,528 suspected cholera cases have been reported, alongside the tragic loss of 53 lives across 31 states,” the NCDC announced.
Meanwhile, in Ogun State, the local government of Ijebu North has reported one fatality and confirmed 25 cases of cholera. Tomi Coker, the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, disclosed these figures in Abeokuta on Monday. She emphasized that proactive measures such as enhanced surveillance and immediate treatment responses have been activated across all 20 local government areas of the state.
Coker highlighted Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Obafemi/Owode, Ijebu North, Ado, and Odo/OTA local government areas as the most affected by the outbreak.
This situation underscores the critical need for heightened public health measures and community awareness to stem the spread of cholera in affected areas. The NCDC and state health authorities continue to collaborate closely to contain the outbreak and mitigate its impact on affected communities.
