During the second quarter of 2024, the Nigerian military’s efforts against terrorism and criminal activities yielded significant results, as disclosed by Director Edward Buba of Defence Media Operations during a press briefing in Abuja. Between April and June, troops achieved notable successes in various theatres of operations.
A total of 2,245 terrorists were neutralized, marking a substantial setback for insurgent forces. Additionally, 3,682 suspected terrorists and other criminal elements were apprehended, contributing to enhanced security across affected regions. The military also successfully rescued 1,993 hostages held captive by terrorists.
In their operations, troops recovered 2,783 weapons and seized 64,547 rounds of ammunition, underscoring their commitment to disarm insurgent groups. Major-General Buba highlighted the role of Operation Delta Safe, which prevented oil thieves from illicitly siphoning an estimated sum exceeding N10 billion worth of crude oil.
The recovered arsenal included 1,169 AK47 rifles, 36,273 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, and 14,764 rounds of 7.62mm NATO rounds, among other arms and ammunition. Furthermore, substantial quantities of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products were intercepted and confiscated.
Despite these achievements, Buba acknowledged that eliminating terrorist threats entirely remains a persistent challenge akin to a marathon, requiring sustained effort and strategic coordination. He affirmed the military’s resolve to degrade terrorist capabilities significantly, ensuring the safety of citizens.
The ongoing operations leverage both ground engagements and air support, allowing for adaptable responses to evolving threats. As areas once occupied by terrorists are cleared, further discoveries of weapons, explosives, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) highlight the insurgents’ prioritization of military capability.
