Ahmed Aliyu, the Governor of Sokoto State, has issued a stern warning to Vice President Kashim Shettima, advising him to thoroughly investigate the accuracy of his information before commenting on sensitive national matters.
In response to Shettima’s recent warning about an alleged plot by the Sokoto State government to depose the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, Governor Aliyu expressed his disappointment and emphasized the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of national issues before making public statements.
The alarm was raised by Prof. Isiaq Akintola, the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Council (MURIC), who claimed that the Sokoto State government had plans to remove the Sultan.
Akintola cited the removal of 15 traditional rulers by Governor Aliyu in April as evidence, cautioning against any actions that could harm the Nigerian Muslim spiritual leader.
Shettima, speaking at the North-West Peace and Security Summit in Katsina State, responded to MURIC’s concerns by affirming the significance of the Sultan and urging the Deputy Governor of Sokoto to protect and promote the Sultan’s role as an institution vital for the nation’s development.
However, Governor Aliyu, in a late-night meeting, refuted MURIC’s claims, labeling them as false and unfounded. He expressed his displeasure with the Vice President for commenting without consulting him first.
The governor clarified that there had been no intention to remove the Sultan and criticized Shettima for relying on misinformation.
He emphasized that the Sultan enjoyed all his rights and freedoms and reassured the public that his government would continue to protect the dignity and importance of the Sultanate Council.
It is crucial for Vice President Shettima, as the second-highest-ranking official in the country, to gather accurate information on national issues before making public statements.
This incident serves as a reminder for all leaders to exercise caution and ensure they are well-informed before commenting on sensitive matters that could potentially cause confusion or unrest.
The Sultanate Council holds great significance in Sokoto, and it is the responsibility of the government and the people to safeguard and promote its esteemed position in society.
