An unidentified suspected electricity vandal was fatally electrocuted while attempting to steal transformer cables belonging to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
According to a statement released on Friday by Emeka Ezeh, Head of Corporate Communications at EEDC, the incident occurred in the early hours of the morning.
Ezeh expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as tragic and unfortunate. He highlighted the growing frequency of vandalism targeting electricity installations across EEDC’s network.
Early this morning, the lifeless body of an unidentified vandal was discovered near a distribution transformer owned by Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc on Missionary Avenue, Coal Camp, Enugu.
It is presumed that the individual was electrocuted while attempting to cut armoured cables, possibly unaware that power had been restored.
Ezeh emphasized that vandalism remains a significant challenge for the company, stressing the need for collaboration with stakeholders to address the issue.
He noted that such criminal activities not only disrupt service delivery to customers but also impact the company’s revenue.
In response to a separate issue, EEDC clarified misinformation circulating on social media regarding free prepaid meters.
The company stated that claims made by Mazi Okechukwu Cyril Nwuche, purportedly a lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University and Anambra State Chairman of South East Electricity Consumers Association, were misleading.
EEDC encouraged customers seeking meters to follow the correct application procedures and ensure they have accurate information.
The company reiterated its commitment to providing reliable electricity service while combating vandalism and misinformation within its operational areas.
