During the National Economic Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria made a groundbreaking decision by approving the National Construction and Household Support Programme.
This program, aimed at bolstering agricultural productivity, strengthening the economy, and providing immediate economic relief for Nigerian households, is set to bring about a transformative change in the nation.
In a statement released by the presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, it was revealed that the program garnered support from the NEC and encompasses financial allocations and infrastructure projects spanning across all geo-political zones in the country.
Notably, a significant aspect of the program is the approval of an N50,000 uplift grant to be distributed to 100,000 families per state for three months.
To address concerns regarding food security and affordability, an additional N155 billion has been earmarked for the purchase and distribution of assorted foodstuff nationwide. This initiative will ensure that every citizen has access to an adequate and affordable food supply.
Furthermore, the program will also focus on infrastructure development. One of the notable projects is the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, which spans seven states and holds immense importance for ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
These states along the highway are known as the food belt of the nation.
Additionally, ongoing projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the Trans-Saharan Highway will receive continued support and funding.
President Tinubu has also approved full counterpart financing for the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Railway and the Ibadan-Abuja segment of the Lagos-Kano Standard-Gauge Railway, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing transportation infrastructure.
In a bid to improve public transportation and reduce carbon emissions, the NEC has allocated N10 billion to each state and the Federal Capital Territory for the procurement of buses and the implementation of the Compressed Natural Gas uplift program.
President Tinubu, during the NEC meeting, emphasized the need for collaboration among state governors to meet the needs of citizens and boost food production.
He urged them to prioritize critical reforms and coordinate efforts to ensure the successful implementation of the program.
“Our states must work together to deliver on the critical reforms required to meet the needs of our people. Time is of the essence, and we must act swiftly. We are ready to support you by mechanizing agricultural processes and providing high-quality seedlings.
Solar-powered irrigation facilities will also be made available to support farmers throughout the year. However, we must now focus on production. Producing high-quality food for our people is of utmost importance.
It generates jobs, creates wealth, and positions us to export the excess. I am committed to providing the necessary support, but we must deliver results. I look forward to your consultations and a comprehensive report within seven days,” President Tinubu stated.
