In a significant verdict, two men, Mr. Ojerbo Solomon and Mr. Ola Babatunde, have been sentenced to death by hanging for their involvement in the robbery, rape, and murder of two women in Agbor, Delta State.
The judgment was delivered by Hon. Justice M.O. Omovie at the State High Court sitting in Ibusa, Oshimili North Council Area.
The prosecution, led by Mr. E.H. Edema, presented evidence from five witnesses showing that on February 8, 2016, the defendants, armed with guns, cutlasses, and knives, forcibly entered the victims’ residence in Agbor.
During the robbery, they not only stole from the victims but also raped them and subsequently slit their throats.
While tragically the two women died from their injuries, a third victim, Mr. Praise Sunday, managed to survive the brutal attack.
Following the crime, Solomon and Babatunde fled on the victims’ motorcycle to Ewohimi in Edo State, where they were later apprehended by the police.
During the trial, the defendants maintained their innocence but did not present any witnesses in their defense.
After evaluating the evidence presented, Justice Omovie concluded that the prosecution had convincingly proven the charges against Solomon and Babatunde beyond a reasonable doubt. As a result, he convicted them as charged and sentenced them to death by hanging.
This verdict underscores the severity with which the Nigerian judiciary treats cases involving heinous crimes such as robbery, rape, and murder, aiming to deliver justice and uphold societal safety.
