A significant faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has announced its unwavering commitment to actively engage in the upcoming local government elections.
This faction has declared its readiness to wholeheartedly participate in the electoral process by fielding candidates for the upcoming elections.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) recently unveiled the timetable for the local government elections, scheduled to take place on October 5, 2024.
During a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Commission’s office in Port Harcourt, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retired), the Chairman of RSIEC, assured all stakeholders that the elections would be conducted in a free, fair, and peaceful manner.
In a statement released in Port Harcourt, Darlington Nwauju, the spokesperson for the APC faction, expressed their support for RSIEC’s decision to engage stakeholders and adhere to the existing Law No. 2 of 1998, in line with the CFR 1999 (as amended).
Nwauju highlighted the faction’s commendation for RSIEC’s refusal to succumb to the agenda of certain individuals seeking to extend the tenure of elected council officials who were sworn in to serve for a specific duration of three years.
The faction firmly stated that they would not endorse any self-serving agenda that undermines the rights of the residents of Rivers State to freely choose their local government leaders.
The adherence to the well-established and widely accepted law governing the conduct of local government elections in the state is seen as a positive step by the faction.
Nwauju further called upon all stakeholders, particularly security agencies, to prevent political actors from disregarding security advisories and creating a false narrative of insecurity within the state.
He emphasized that individuals involved in political violence should be exposed and held accountable according to the law. Nwauju firmly asserted that Rivers State is not a Banana Republic, and its residents have the fundamental right to good governance, peace, and development.
