In a bold move to revolutionize the healthcare landscape of Akwa Ibom State, the State House of Assembly has announced a comprehensive tour of state hospitals and health institutions.
This groundbreaking initiative seeks to address the mounting concerns over negligence and inadequate facilities that have been reported by the public.
Hon. Moses Essien, the representative of Ibiono Ibom State Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on Health, unveiled this ambitious plan during a discussion with Correspondents in Uyo on Wednesday.
He emphasized that the committee’s unwavering commitment marks a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
Speaking about the state of public healthcare facilities, Hon. Essien acknowledged the public’s concerns and assured them that action will be taken. He stated, “We will conduct surprise visits to these hospitals to witness the conditions firsthand.
Medical professionals should be present and attentive, not just responding to emergencies. Through our oversight, we will ensure that these standards are met and that we address any issues directly with Governor Umo Eno.”
Hon. Essien emphasized the proactive role of the Assembly in tackling challenges within the health sector. He highlighted a recent example, stating, “We have already responded to issues raised in the House.
For instance, at Okorette General Hospital, we summoned key health officials and mandated immediate corrective actions, which resulted in significant improvements.”
Additionally, Hon. Essien revealed that the establishment of the Board for the Akwa Ibom Health Insurance Scheme, recently inaugurated by Governor Umo Eno, was an initiative of his committee.
This move is expected to enhance healthcare accessibility and affordability for residents, marking another milestone in the state’s ongoing healthcare reforms.
Regarding the Ibom Specialty Hospital, which was built during the tenure of former Governor Godswill Akpabio, the lawmaker disclosed that the committee had conducted a thorough inspection and provided necessary recommendations to Governor Umo Eno, who expressed his commitment to addressing the identified issues.
Hon. Essien also drew attention to the abundant but untapped natural resources, including oil wells, in the Ibiono Ibom area. He emphasized the need for access roads to attract investors and fully utilize these resources for the benefit of the community.
Recently having returned to the PDP from the YPP, Hon. Essien declared political parties as platforms for fulfilling the wishes and desires of constituents.
In response, Mr. Bassey Anthony, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel and correspondent for The Nation newspaper, pledged to collaborate with the legislature in showcasing the state’s progress.
He shared his personal encounters with public healthcare facilities in the state and called for urgent attention to address the challenges.
