Edo State governorship candidate from the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Olumide Akpata, has called for a reform in the country’s educational curriculum to include functional technology training, stating that any child not educated in technology in today’s world would be functionally illiterate.
During a recent visit to the secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Benin City, Akpata proposed an overhaul in the state’s education system, particularly at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), which he described as a disaster.
Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship candidate for the upcoming Edo State election, has called for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s education curriculum. He stressed the importance of integrating technology into education, warning that without it, children would be left functionally illiterate in today’s rapidly advancing world.
Speaking to journalists during his visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Benin City, Akpata emphasized the critical need for educational reform. He argued that a curriculum lacking technological education fails to prepare students for the demands of the modern workforce and global economy.
Akpata lamented the poor condition of schools in Edo State, vowing to overhaul the educational system if elected. He specifically promised to restore the glory of Ambrose Alli University (AAU), describing its current state as disastrous.
“We must prioritize education and ensure our children are equipped with the skills needed for the future,” Akpata stated. “Ambrose Alli University should be a beacon of excellence, not a disaster.”
In addition to education, Akpata addressed the dire state of infrastructure in Edo State, particularly the roads. He criticized the current administration’s decision to build a museum and invest in a five-star hotel, calling these projects misplaced priorities given the state’s pressing needs.
“We have a problem as far as the roads are concerned. Labour Party is here for the rescue, we have a plan,” he asserted.
Akpata disclosed that the state’s monthly internal revenue and federal allocation amount to N16 billion, while its debt profile stands at N600 billion. He argued that funds should be directed towards essential services and infrastructure rather than luxury projects.
Akpata also pledged to revamp the health sector by building healthcare centers in each of the 192 wards in the state. He criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration for lacking significant legacy projects after eight years in office, promising to provide quality healthcare for all residents.
Another key point in Akpata’s agenda is advocating for local government autonomy. He believes that local governance is crucial for development as it is closer to the people. However, he emphasized that local government officials should reside within their constituencies to ensure effective governance and accountability.
Akpata praised the role of journalists in nation building and urged them to continue their efforts to uplift the country. He called on them to help guide the nation through its current challenges, recognizing the critical role of a free and active press in democracy.
Akpata’s campaign centers on putting the people at the heart of governance. He criticized the current administration for sidelining the needs of the populace and pledged to refocus efforts on areas that directly impact the lives of Edo State residents. His vision includes improved education, better healthcare, robust infrastructure, and a responsive local government system.
With the election approaching, Akpata’s proposals aim to address the immediate needs of Edo State while setting a foundation for long-term growth and development. His emphasis on education and technology underscores a forward-thinking approach that seeks to prepare Edo State for future challenges and opportunities.
