Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party for Last year’s Election, has expressed his admiration for Ola Olukoyede, the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for his unwavering commitment to combating corruption and recovering stolen assets in Nigeria.
In a statement shared on social media, Obi commended Olukoyede for sounding the alarm on the extensive looting of the nation’s treasury and assets by public officials, hailing it as a commendable effort.
As a former Governor of Anambra State, Obi has consistently emphasized the urgent need to address grand corruption, which he believes has significantly damaged the economy and left citizens impoverished.
Obi stated, “The recent alert raised by Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the Executive Chairman of the EFCC, regarding the massive looting of our treasury and assets by public officials in Nigeria deserves commendation.
“I have long advocated for the prioritization of tackling grand corruption, which has ravaged our economy and inflicted hardship on our people.”
He further urged anti-graft agencies to direct their focus towards investigating cases of grand theft and corruption in government and public asset management. This includes tackling issues such as oil theft, budget padding, contract inflation, embezzlement, and misappropriation of public funds.
Obi also stressed the importance of holding accountable those involved in practices of “cronyism” and “nepotism”. For minor cases of petty theft and money laundering at social events, he suggested that lesser agencies could handle the investigations.
Peter Obi’s appreciation for the EFCC Chairman’s dedication to combating corruption and recovering stolen assets shows his commitment to addressing the pressing issue of grand corruption in Nigeria.
By Constantly calling for transparency and accountability, Obi continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the discourse on governance and the fight against corruption in the country.
