A cholera outbreak in Badagry has resulted in two fatalities and the hospitalization of five individuals.
Olatunde Bakare, the Medical Director of the General Hospital in Badagry, confirmed the news. According to Bakare, officials from the local Correctional Centre brought the victims to the hospital.
On July 9, around 7:00 p.m., six inmates from the centre were admitted, one of whom was already deceased upon arrival. Another inmate succumbed to the illness the following morning.
“Laboratory tests confirmed cholera, and the affected individuals were admitted to the emergency section of the hospital,” Bakare reported.
“The next day, another inmate was brought in, bringing the total number of patients currently receiving treatment to five.”
Bakare also mentioned that one of the patients has been treated and discharged. In response to the outbreak, the Lagos State Ministry of Health swiftly deployed monitoring teams consisting of doctors and environmental service officers to both the prison and the General Hospital in Badagry, providing the necessary medications.
“The ministry supplied intravenous fluids and consumables and implemented measures for environmental improvement and water treatment,” Bakare explained.
“These efforts have led to a reduction in new cases and significant improvements in the condition of those admitted.”
