President Bola Tinubu has officially confirmed his government’s commitment to restructuring Nigeria and its economy through lawful means. In response to the groundbreaking ruling by the Supreme Court on July 11, which restored autonomy to Local Government Councils nationwide, President Tinubu expressed his belief in utilizing legitimate channels to reshape the country and create a more equitable society.

“This judgment serves as a resounding affirmation that we can achieve restructuring and economic transformation through legal avenues, making Nigeria a better place to live and ensuring fairness for all,” President Tinubu stated. “We initiated this legal action because we firmly believe that our people deserve relief, and today’s verdict ensures that only locally elected officials will have control over the resources of the people.”

President Tinubu lamented the decline in the provision of essential amenities and public goods, such as roads, street lighting, drains, parks, gardens, and community security, due to the weakening of local governments.

He emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the constitutional rights and principles of local governments, including financial autonomy, holds historic significance and strengthens efforts to enhance Nigeria’s true federal fabric for national development.

The President commended the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), for his dedicated and patriotic efforts in this important assignment.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the principles outlined in the charter that governs citizens, government institutions, and the different tiers of government, aiming to establish an efficient and performance-driven governance system that benefits all Nigerians.

President Tinubu highlighted the long-standing challenge of ineffective local government administration, pointing out the lack of governance at the grassroots level of socio-political structure.

He emphasized that it is now the responsibility of local council leaders to ensure that Nigerians at the grassroots level feel the positive impact of people-oriented service delivery.

“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, regardless of their faith, tribe, gender, political affiliation, or any other artificial divisions that may exist among us. This country belongs to all of us,” President Tinubu emphasized.

“Thanks to this judgment, our people, especially the disadvantaged, will be able to hold their local leaders accountable for their actions and inactions. The allocation of funds to local government accounts will be transparent, and services must be provided without excuses.”
