The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will commence the enforcement of the digitalised Central Motor Registry (e-CMR) on July 29.

In a statement released on Saturday in Abuja, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi urged vehicle owners to comply by registering their vehicles.

Adejobi explained that the e-CMR is designed to enhance the security of lives and property by modernizing and digitalizing the motor vehicle registration system, thus strengthening the country’s safety and security framework.

He stated that the e-CMR is an advanced, real-time online repository of motor vehicle data, which will aid police investigations and operations, and help combat vehicle-related crimes such as terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery.

The police spokesperson highlighted that transitioning to a digitalised system will streamline the documentation and verification processes for vehicle ownership and related transactions.

With the e-CMR, services like change of ownership, license number, engine, and chassis/body will become more seamless.

“The system will validate the genuineness and ownership of vehicles, enhance the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles effectively, and prevent innocent buyers from purchasing stolen vehicles,” Adejobi said.

Inspector-General of Police (I-G) Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun has ordered full publicity of the e-CMR to inform the public about the requirements, processes, and enforcement procedures before the planned enforcement.

Members of the public can obtain the digitalised e-CMR certificate online at https://cmris.npf.gov.ng. For further inquiries, they can contact the CMR Command Centre at FHQ Abuja on 08117777666, 09169892000, and FHQ Annex Lagos on 08117777555, 09169891000. Technical support is also available at [email protected].

Adejobi called for the understanding and support of Nigerians and residents for this initiative, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police is committed to leveraging technology and strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security.

He noted that the enforcement of the e-CMR is necessary to ensure a safer environment for vehicle ownership and reduce the trend of vehicle theft by curbing the sale of stolen vehicles in the country. Adejobi urged vehicle owners and users to promptly embrace and support this initiative for optimum safety and security.
