President Bola Tinubu’s decision to create a new Ministry of Livestock has faced criticism from the Nigeria Professionals in Diaspora (NPID). At a press conference held in Abuja, NPID President Johnson David urged President Tinubu to rethink this plan. He argued that forming a new ministry might waste resources and suggested improving current systems instead.
David acknowledged that President Tinubu has made significant progress since taking office, especially in combating corruption and implementing economic reforms. However, he voiced concerns that adding a new ministry could complicate government structure and increase costs.
“We believe that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development could be enhanced to meet the needs of the livestock industry, avoiding the extra expenses and bureaucracy of a new ministry,” David explained.
Supporting this view, Ikechukwu Obinna, a senior NPID member, said that the resources needed for a standalone Ministry of Livestock could be better spent on improving existing agricultural systems. “Our analysis shows that optimizing current frameworks would be a more efficient and cost-effective way to support the livestock sector,” he noted.
Obinna emphasized that President Tinubu should think about the long-term effects of creating a new ministry. He suggested focusing on strengthening existing structures to better assist livestock farmers and stakeholders. Obinna also assured continued support for the President’s vision for a thriving and sustainable Nigeria.
The NPID praised President Tinubu’s efforts to revitalize the Nigerian economy and promote sustainable growth. They highlighted his significant policy moves, like removing fuel subsidies, which have helped stabilize the country’s finances and set the stage for long-term prosperity.
Dr. Suleiman Abubakar, NPID Secretary, commended President Tinubu’s dedication to infrastructure development. “The infrastructure projects, including roads and railways, under his leadership, are improving citizens’ quality of life and boosting Nigeria’s economic competitiveness,” Abubakar said.
