Governor Alex Otti of Abia State made a significant announcement during a meeting with labour leaders, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
In his address, Governor Otti clarified the state government’s position on the implementation of the N35,000 wage award and emphasized the need for a closer relationship with organised labour.
Contrary to misleading reports, Governor Otti stated that the state government has not yet received any funds from the federal government specifically allocated for the wage implementation.
He urged for accurate information dissemination, stating, “Last time I checked, there were no such monies. This state has not received a dime from the federal government to implement any wage award.”
Governor Otti assured the labour leaders that the government has been diligently implementing the minimum wage, highlighting that the state’s payroll reflects that the lowest-paid worker receives a monthly salary of N30,000.
However, he acknowledged the concerns raised by the media and requested the Accountant-General to investigate any discrepancies in the payroll, ensuring compliance with the minimum wage.
Recognizing the economic challenges, including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange rate adjustments, inflation, and poverty, Governor Otti expressed the need for an increase in the minimum wage.
He reiterated the state government’s commitment to implementing the new minimum wage promptly after the federal government finalizes its decision on the matter.
Governor Otti also addressed other labour-related issues during the meeting. He explained the rationale behind reversing the command promotions granted by the previous administration, citing a flawed process.
He assured the unions that promotions would continue to be based on due process and directed the Accountant-General to disburse leave allowances to Abia workers.
To foster a stronger relationship with organised labour, Governor Otti announced plans to establish a Ministry of Labour and Productivity. This ministry would serve as a dedicated platform for addressing labour concerns and enhancing communication between the government and workers.
Notably, Governor Otti declared that a commissioner from the “Labour Community” would be appointed to head the ministry, further demonstrating the government’s commitment to prioritizing labour issues.
The meeting between Governor Alex Otti and labour leaders in Abia State shed light on the state government’s stance on wage implementation and highlighted its efforts to strengthen the relationship with organised labour.
