A police inspector named Hussaini Umar was killed by a group of robbers in Abuja. This gang, known as a ‘one chance’ syndicate, tricks people into their vehicles to rob them. On Friday night, Inspector Umar got into one of these vehicles at Maitama Junction, hoping to get home to Dei-Dei, a community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Sadly, Inspector Umar did not make it home. On Saturday morning, a group of police officers went to Kubwa General Hospital to collect his body. They were taking him back to his hometown of Zaria for burial. One of the officers, who did not want to be named, shared that the robbers had stabbed Umar and left him near a bridge close to the NNPC Junction in Kubwa. After being dumped there, another vehicle ran over him. Some motorists saw what happened and told a nearby police patrol team, who then took him to the hospital.
Another police officer from the Dei-Dei area also confirmed the incident. He said Umar had been living in the community for a while and had recently moved his family to live with him. The spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said she would look into the matter and provide more information, but she had not done so by the time this report was written.
The rise of ‘one chance’ robberies in Abuja is a big concern. These criminals use tricks to get people into their vehicles, like pretending to be regular taxi drivers or offering cheaper fares. Once the victim is inside, the robbers show their true intentions, threatening or harming the person to take their belongings.
In Inspector Umar’s case, the gang’s actions were especially brutal, leading to his death. The fact that he was a police officer makes this even more shocking, showing how bold and ruthless these criminals are.
The ‘one chance’ problem is not just in Abuja. Similar crimes happen in other big cities in Nigeria, like Lagos and Port Harcourt. Many of these incidents are not reported, making it hard for the police to stop these gangs. But the killing of a police inspector might push the authorities to take stronger actions says an eyewitness.
