Aminu Ado Bayero has been ordered to stop presenting himself as the Emir. This decision came from Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court 17 on a Monday. The judge also issued a similar order for the former Emirs of Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye, instructing them not to act as Emirs anymore.

Justice Aliyu specifically prohibited the former Emirs, along with their representatives or anyone else acting on their behalf, from claiming to be the Emirs of Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye.

This ruling stands in contrast to an earlier decision made on June 20 by a Federal High Court in Kano. That court had nullified the reinstatement of Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano, which the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, had recently reinstated him to.

The Kano State Government had brought the case to the state high court, asking it to prevent Bayero and the other four Emirs from acting as Emirs. The government also requested the court’s approval for a 48-hour notice it had given to the deposed Emirs to leave their palaces.

In the judgment delivered on Monday, Justice Aliyu instructed the five deposed Emirs to hand over all traditional royal items to the government and to Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, the legitimate Emir of Kano.

Regarding the removal of deposed Emir Bayero from his palace in Nassarawa, the judge stated that this issue should be handled by a Rent Tribunal, not her court. The court also affirmed the validity of the Kano State Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, declaring it in accordance with Section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution.
