Manchester United’s latest acquisition, Joshua Zirkzee, has already made a lasting impression with his vibrant description of himself as a “creative, good with the ball, and unpredictable” player.
The €42.5 million signing from Bologna has solidified his place in the United squad, signing a five-year contract with the option for an additional year.
Bologna, against all odds, secured a spot in the top four of Italian football last season, marking their best performance since 1967/1968.
Zirkzee played a pivotal role in their success, starting in 32 out of 38 league games. Throughout these appearances, he contributed 11 goals and five assists, rightfully earning the title of Bologna’s top goalscorer, ultimately capturing the attention of Manchester United.
As the new season approaches, Zirkzee finds himself in a competitive position with Rasmus Hojlund for a starting spot. However, given his versatility, it is believed that he can excel in various attacking positions on the field.
During his unveiling, Zirkzee sat down with the club’s media for an interview that delved into his transfer and what he brings to the team. Expressing his confidence in the move, he stated, “I have a lot of trust and a good feeling about this step. The decision wasn’t difficult. While I hold a deep affection for Bologna, Manchester United simply gave me an overwhelmingly positive feeling.”
Zirkzee added, “I’m thrilled about this opportunity. Transferring to Manchester United is an immensely positive milestone in my career. I can’t wait to get started and build upon last season’s achievements. Every day, I strive to improve and give my best.”
When asked to describe his qualities, Zirkzee modestly responded, “I consider myself a creative player, skilled with the ball. At times, I can be unpredictable. Those words perfectly capture my style.”
In terms of entertaining the fans, Zirkzee emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying, “While it’s enjoyable to entertain supporters on an individual level, it’s even better when the entire team can create a thrilling experience. Making the fans happy is crucial.”
Reflecting on his Dutch background, Zirkzee acknowledged the privilege of working with coach Erik ten Hag, who has brought in several Dutch players since his appointment. “Being Dutch myself, having a compatriot as the coach is an added privilege. However, Manchester United’s status as a prestigious and massive club was the primary reason for my decision,” Zirkzee explained.
Additionally, Zirkzee expressed his excitement about working with Ruud van Nistelrooy, another Dutch football legend. “Having Dutch people around certainly makes the transition easier. Fortunately, I’m adaptable and easy-going, so it’ll be a smooth process. Nevertheless, their presence is always appreciated,” he stated.
In a heartfelt moment, Zirkzee shared his football idols, confessing that Ronaldinho was his ultimate hero during his younger years. As he grew older, Zlatan Ibrahimovic also became a source of inspiration.
He humorously mentioned the troubles he faced as a child, coming home late from playing football and occasionally causing havoc. However, everything worked out well in the end, and he hopes his mother forgives him for those mischievous moments.
Following his representation of the Netherlands at Euro 2024, Zirkzee will enjoy a well-deserved break before joining his new teammates in early August.
Excitement is building as he might make his debut against Fulham on the opening day of the Premier League season, where fans eagerly await his first appearance in the red jersey of Manchester United.
