President Bola Tinubu has warmly congratulated Justice Stella Anukam on her recent re-election as a Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, securing another six-year tenure. This significant event occurred during the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting Executive Council in Accra, Ghana.
Justice Anukam, a prominent figure in Nigerian law, earned her law degree from Obafemi Awolowo University (previously known as the University of Ife) in Osun State in 1984 and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in August 1985. In addition to being a chartered secretary and arbitrator, she brings a wealth of administrative experience to her role.
Throughout her distinguished career, she has held key positions such as the Director of Special Programmes at the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies in Abuja and the Director of the International and Comparative Law Department at the Federal Ministry of Justice.
In his commendation, President Tinubu praised Justice Anukam for her pivotal role in advancing human rights law in Africa. He encouraged her to continue utilizing her extensive knowledge and experience in her position at the African Court.
According to a statement from his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, the President reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to promoting qualified Nigerians for international roles, highlighting Nigeria’s vital position on the world stage.
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, established by member states of the African Union, plays a fundamental role in safeguarding human rights across the continent, working in collaboration with the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The court is composed of eleven judges who are nominated by African Union member states and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Nigeria ratified the protocol that created the court in 2004 and remains an active participant.
In another development, President Tinubu has appointed Dr. Mainasara Umar Kogo as the new Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). Dr. Kogo, an experienced lawyer and analyst, possesses a deep understanding of law, security, economics, politics, and international diplomacy, which he will bring to his new position.
“The President expects professionalism, integrity, and a strong commitment to the nation in the performance of duties as Chairman of the CCT,” Ngelale stated in his announcement.
