The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has expressed confidence that local councils can play a significant role in tackling insecurity, particularly through partnerships with state governments. This conclusion emerged from ALGON’s 48th council meeting held in Lafia, the capital of Nasarawa State, on July 17th and 18th, 2024.
In a statement released by ALGON’s chairman from Gombe State, Sani Haruna, along with his Ogun State counterpart, Emiola Gazal, the association acknowledged the valuable contributions made by various private entities, institutions, and corporate organizations during the meeting, emphasizing their commitment to working together for the betterment of grassroots communities.
“The Local Government Councils possess the necessary capabilities to confront security challenges in tandem with State Governments, while also fulfilling their essential duties in areas such as primary healthcare, basic education, water supply, rural development, and other vital infrastructures, as outlined in the 4th Schedule of the 1999 Constitution (as amended),” ALGON stated.

Additionally, ALGON commended the recent Supreme Court ruling that granted financial independence to local councils, extending gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and other key figures for their support throughout this process.
