Former Senate Chief Whip Ali Ndume has called on President Bola Tinubu to pay attention to the concerns of Nigerian youths in light of an impending nationwide protest.
Ndume cautioned that the demonstration could spiral out of control, particularly since there isn’t a clear leadership structure among the protesters.
During an appearance on Channels Television on Monday, the Borno South Senator reflected on past events, saying, “My concern stems from what transpired during the EndSARS protests. The absence of identifiable leaders may exacerbate the situation, making it more challenging to manage.”
He echoed the sentiments of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) president, advocating for Tinubu to actively engage with the youth and address their grievances.
The call for protest was initiated by prominent activist Omoyele Sowore, who is rallying citizens to demonstrate against the government’s handling of economic hardships in August.
This plea for action comes as Ndume has previously criticized Tinubu for being unapproachable to both ministers and lawmakers in the face of the prevailing difficulties experienced by the populace.
Back in October 2020, young Nigerians mobilized to protest against the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), which ultimately escalated when military personnel opened fire on demonstrators at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation.
