The Commissioner for Health in Abia State, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, who was suspended from office on June 11, has officially resigned from her position. This development was confirmed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Njoku Ukoha, in a statement released to the press on Wednesday in Umuahia.
According to Ukoha, Dr. Okoronkwo submitted her resignation letter to Governor Alex Otti on Tuesday, even as the panel investigating her alleged misconduct was still in session.
In accepting her resignation, Governor Otti expressed his gratitude for Dr. Okoronkwo’s contributions to the state’s health sector over the past year. “The governor thanked her for her services and modest achievements in repositioning Abia’s Health Sector for better service delivery in the last one year,” the statement read.
Governor Otti also extended his best wishes to Dr. Okoronkwo in her future endeavors. The statement reiterated the governor’s commitment to the transformation of Abia State, emphasizing that the mandate given to him by the people includes the authority to assemble, suspend, or dismiss his team as necessary.
“Otti further noted that his mandate also extends to rejigging and reshuffling his cabinet when needed, with the sole purpose of delivering on his promises to the people,” Ukoha added.
Thepaan reports that Dr. Okoronkwo’s resignation is the third such departure from Governor Otti’s administration. Last week, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Chima Oriaku, and the Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Monica Ironkwe, also resigned their appointments.
Mr. Ukoha confirmed these resignations but did not provide reasons for their decisions.
