The Federal Government has earmarked funds for the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR) to conduct pre-retirement training for various categories of retiring staff.
In a statement released on Friday, Mr. Dasuki Arabi, Director-General of BPSR, announced that the training targets employees from federal parastatals across the country.
Arabi explained that the initiative is designed to assist retiring civil servants in effectively planning for their post-retirement lives, ensuring they transition smoothly into their new phase of life.
In line with the Public Procurement Act 2007, the Bureau is seeking bids from reputable and experienced companies to provide this training. The goal is to invite qualified firms to express their interest in training staff from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
Arabi emphasized that retirement represents a crucial opportunity for civil servants to redirect their lives, provided they plan properly. He noted that many retirees struggle with this transition due to lack of preparation, and this training aims to address that issue.
The restored program, originally initiated by the federal government over a decade ago, focuses on personal development and empowerment. It aims to offer practical entrepreneurship training to retiring staff, helping them explore business ventures of their choice.
Additionally, the training will equip retirees with skills to adapt to life after retirement, including financial planning and business opportunities. It will also provide guidance on accessing terminal benefits and managing extended family pressures.
Arabi highlighted the importance of the program for retirees’ personal health and wellness, noting that prolonged idleness can negatively impact their well-being after years of active service.
He also pointed out that this intervention aims to ensure retirees’ financial stability, reduce unemployment and poverty, and contribute positively to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Furthermore, it is expected to help retirees leave a lasting legacy for their families.
