Vice President Kashim Shettima on Friday emphasized the need for Nigerian youths to prioritize problem-solving over protests amid ongoing economic hardships.
Addressing the delegation of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima acknowledged the difficulties caused by recent economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies.
“This is the time for us to solve our problems, not to protest,” Shettima stated. “The right to protest is guaranteed in most democracies around the world, but when you start the agitation, and you don’t know where it will end, it is a road to anarchy.”
Shettima expressed empathy for the struggles Nigerians are facing and emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing these issues.
He also announced the federal government’s participation in the Grand Challenges Nigeria (GCNg) Project, a global health initiative aimed at combating malnutrition and food insecurity in Nigeria.
As part of the government’s response, Shettima reiterated support for the Nutrition 774 Initiative, designed to promote positive changes across communities. He called for advocacy, engagement, and patience, assuring that the President is committed to the Nigerian project.
A statement by Shettima’s spokesman, Stanley Nkwocha, highlighted the GCNg Project’s goals to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in addressing public health and food system challenges. Shettima urged the NSN to innovate and collaborate closely with the government.
Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, leading the NSN delegation, called on Shettima to spearhead the government’s component of the project and garner ministerial support.
Senior Programmes Manager for Grand Challenges Nigeria, Godwin Bamsa, noted the project’s potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s health, food systems, agriculture, science, technology, and innovation.
The NSN delegation included President Professor Wasiu Afolabi, Board of Trustees Member Professor Ignatius Onimawo, immediate past President Dr. Bartholomew Brai, Vice President North Dr. Aliyu Maimuna Ladidi, Chairperson FCT Abuja Chapter Major Edith Ogheneovo Nwachinaemere (Rtd), and Council Member Dr. Salihu Maiwada Abubakar.
