In the quest for economic revival and resilience amidst challenging times, a group of forward-thinking innovators from Akwa Ibom State, united under the Ibom Innovative Network (IIN), has underscored the pivotal role of technology and rapid innovation in transforming Nigeria’s economic landscape.

Addressing t he press during a recent gathering in Uyo, the chairman of the group, Amanda Etuk, highlighted the critical need for businesses to embrace technology, research, and industry advancements to not only survive but thrive in the current economic and environmental crises facing the nation.

Etuk emphasized, “Technology, startup enterprise, and rapid innovation hold the key to pulling Nigeria out of its current economic challenges. The tech ecosystem in Akwa Ibom State stands poised to elevate a budding innovation hub into a resilient, dynamic, and innovative powerhouse, positioning itself as Africa’s New Tech Destination.”

Acknowledging the harsh operating environment for businesses in Nigeria, Etuk commended the efforts of innovators in finding innovative solutions through technology, research, and industry practices.

She pointed to the remarkable progress made by the Ibom Innovation Network, particularly through initiatives like the Akwa Ibom Tech Week and other ecosystem-wide programs that have showcased the region’s potential for tech-driven growth and sustainability.

The president of IIN, Hanson Johnson, echoed these sentiments, noting that Akwa Ibom has emerged as a burgeoning hub for tech enthusiasts and professionals, with a developer ecosystem experiencing rapid growth at a rate of 29.7% month-on-month since March 2023, rivalling the expansion seen in larger tech hubs like Lagos.

Johnson called upon government intervention to support this burgeoning tech ecosystem by investing in critical infrastructure, enhancing educational opportunities, promoting research and development, and instituting policies that offer tax incentives, grants, and regulatory frameworks to spur startup growth and attract investments that can fortify an innovative and resilient business environment in the state.

Furthermore, Johnson stressed the importance of sustainability in driving innovation, urging innovators to pivot towards developing solutions that are not only innovative but also environmentally conscious.

He highlighted the significance of diversifying revenue streams, fostering networking, and promoting knowledge-sharing within the innovation community as essential pillars for building resilience and ensuring long-term success in the sector.

“Innovators should focus on sustainable solutions, diversify revenue streams, and embrace agility in the face of challenges. Building strong networks and sharing knowledge within the community will enhance resilience and drive continuous growth,” Johnson emphasized.

The visionary strides taken by the Ibom Innovative Network and its members underscore the crucial role of technology and innovation in propelling economic resurgence and fostering a culture of adaptability and progress in Nigeria.

As the nation navigates through turbulent economic waters, the emphasis on technological advancements and innovative practices heralds a promising path towards a more resilient and prosperous future for all sectors of the economy.
