The Federal Government has presented 20 improved versions of Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) to the military for troops protection during counter insurgency operations.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Dr Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, who represented the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, handed over the documents and keys of the 20 APCs to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, on Wednesday.
A statement by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, said the APCs are an improved version with enhanced weapons and communication systems that can locate adversaries from distance and engage them effectively.
Armoured Personnel Carriers are crucial assets that significantly enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of military operations.
These vehicles provide crucial protection to troops against various threats on the battlefield, including small arms fire, artillery shrapnel, and improvised explosive devices.
The armoured design of these carriers increases the survivability of soldiers, allowing them to maneuver through hostile environments with reduced risk.
In his remarks during the handing-over of the APCs, the Permanent Secretary said he was happy with the current synergy existing mong the Services, while describing the consideration for contracting local manufacturers for the production of the APCs as a welcome development.
The importance of self-sufficiency and economic independence, the speaker highlights the multifaceted benefits of the proposed initiative. Not only will cost savings be realized at a national level, but the potential for job creation within the domestic workforce which serves as a crucial pillar for sustainable economic growth.
In response, the Chief of Defence Staff expressed gratitude to the Minister of Defence for the commendable gesture.

The production and supply of APCs is by a Nigerian company.
This development not only boosts the domestic manufacturing sector but also enhances Nigeria’s self-reliance in meeting its security needs. By sourcing APCs locally, the Nigerian government can reduce dependency on foreign suppliers and strengthen its defense capabilities.
The chairman of the company, Engineer Kola Balogun, said the company will also train operators and provide after purchase services like maitainance, spare parts, and repairs.
According to him, the decision to export machines not only benefits the company by increasing its profitability but also contributes to the overall economic growth and stability of the country.
