As the nation braces for a scheduled protest, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has once again expressed his concerns, warning that such actions may not serve the best interests of Nigeria.
This caution was conveyed in a statement released to the press on Monday night by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
The IGP articulated that Nigeria cannot afford the repercussions of violent protests, especially those being endorsed by certain groups. He noted, “Hardship is not exclusive to Nigeria; it is a phenomenon being experienced worldwide. Is the government taking steps to address it? Absolutely! This is indicative of a government that is responsive to its citizens.”
He emphasized that while the economic difficulties faced are part of a global crisis, the Nigerian government is diligently working to alleviate these challenges for its people.
Reflecting on the earlier EndSARS protests of 2020, the IGP recounted the chaos that ensued, including the destruction of police facilities and the surge in criminal activities that followed. “With police stations destroyed, lawlessness prevailed. Criminals exploited the situation, and safety became a serious concern, particularly for women after dark,” he warned.
The IGP stressed the importance of learning from past events, urging the public to recognize the potential dangers associated with unchecked protests. He noted, “History teaches us that violent demonstrations can lead to tragic outcomes, including loss of life and property, and can instill fear in communities.”
While acknowledging the fundamental right to protest, he clarified, “The right to protest must be exercised peacefully.” He encouraged Nigerians to utilize their right responsibly, steering clear of actions that could lead to violence. Peaceful protests, he underscored, are vital for voicing concerns and fostering change without endangering lives or property.
Furthermore, the IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to uphold citizens’ rights while ensuring public order. He called on all Nigerians to collaborate with law enforcement to guarantee that any upcoming demonstrations remain peaceful and orderly.
