The Senate is currently holding an emergency meeting in response to the nationwide protests about hunger and hardship that are set to start on Thursday.

The meeting is being led by the President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio. Before beginning their discussions, the lawmakers observed a minute of silence to honour the late Senator Ifeanyi Uba. This was done in anticipation of receiving an official notice of his death from his family to the Senate. Following this, the Senate moved into a private session.

It is important to note that both the Senate and the House of Representatives had announced an emergency session for today (Wednesday) on Sunday.

On Monday, Rotimi Akin, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives, released a statement saying that the session scheduled for Wednesday will focus on urgent matters that need immediate attention from lawmakers.

The statement said, “The House of Representatives is informing the public that, following the directive from Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., a special session will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. All members have been called from their districts to attend this important meeting. This notice was sent out through an internal memo from the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., on Sunday.”

Akin also mentioned that it is a common practice for the House to come back from recess to deal with urgent national issues.
