In response to escalating tensions, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umar Zulum, has implemented a 24-hour curfew throughout the state.
The announcement, conveyed by ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, spokesperson for the State Police Command, indicates that this measure is aimed at curbing further disturbances and restoring order following violent protests that erupted on Thursday.
The unrest was exacerbated by a tragic incident on Wednesday, when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated at a local tea shop in Kawori, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals and leaving many others severely injured.
The statement underscored the state’s dedication to maintaining law and order, emphasizing the seriousness of the current situation and the necessity for prompt action.
“In accordance with our constitutional duty to restore peace, His Excellency, Governor Prof. Babagana Umar Zulum, in consultation with security leadership in the state, has deemed it necessary to impose a 24-hour curfew effective immediately,” the announcement declared.
State officials explained that the curfew is intended to prevent further incidents and safeguard the welfare of the community.
Daso urged residents to remain composed and adhere to the law during this challenging time.
“Updates will be provided as the situation evolves,” the statement concluded.
