Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, has voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the approach taken by Nigerian security agencies in managing civil unrest. His comments came during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House on Wednesday, where he expressed his support for an upcoming nationwide protest.
Yusuf specifically criticized the Nigeria Police Force, accusing them of defying state government directives. “I cannot fathom why security agencies, particularly the police, refuse to adhere to our instructions,” he stated.
“When we issue commands, they often respond by saying they have received orders from ‘above.’ Who exactly is this ‘above’? I am the chief security officer of this state, and if there’s an issue with that, then perhaps the Nigerian constitution needs to be revised,” he asserted.
With the protest on the horizon, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called on the government to implement tangible measures to address the economic hardships faced by citizens. “We need to identify effective ways to assist those in need and ensure that the aid reaches the intended recipients,” the Emir emphasized during the meeting.
The impending protest has ignited discussions among various factions, with some endorsing the demonstration as a necessary step to confront the nation’s economic issues, while others advocate for dialogue to prevent potential disruptions to public order.
