On Monday, chaos erupted in Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State as hoodlums, posing as protesters, launched a violent attack on a branch of one of the new generation banks located in Tudun Wada.
The incident has raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the region, as these criminal elements exploited the cover of ongoing protests to engage in wanton destruction and looting.
The spokesperson for the Kaduna State Police Command, Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident in a phone conversation with news correspondents.
According to Hassan, the assailants forcibly entered the bank premises, where they looted valuables and caused extensive damage. Several vehicles parked within the bank’s compound were also vandalized during the attack, underscoring the lawlessness that marked the day’s events.
Hassan, who holds the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, used the opportunity to dispel rumors that had been circulating regarding the incident. There were reports suggesting that a police armoured personnel carrier (APC) had been seized by the violent protesters at Tudun Wada.
However, Hassan clarified that these reports were unfounded. He explained that while the crowd of protesters did manage to climb onto the armoured vehicle, the driver skillfully navigated through the mob, avoiding any direct confrontation. The police had to exercise caution because the vehicle was carrying live ammunition, and any excessive use of force could have led to a catastrophic escalation.
The unrest was not confined to Tudun Wada alone. The Kaduna State Police Command also reported a series of other violent incidents across the state. In Rigasa, located in the Igabi Local Government Area, hoodlums set fire to a security patrol vehicle belonging to the Kaduna State Vigilance Service. The arson attack further highlighted the increasing boldness of these criminal groups, who seem intent on destabilizing the region.
In addition to the incidents in Tudun Wada and Rigasa, there was also an attack on the Zaria office of the Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Agency (KASTLEA). The office was reportedly set ablaze by hoodlums, adding another layer of concern for the state authorities. The destruction of the KASTLEA office is particularly troubling, as the agency plays a crucial role in maintaining traffic order and enforcing road safety regulations across the state.
These attacks come at a time when Kaduna State has been grappling with a wave of violence and insecurity, exacerbated by protests that have turned increasingly violent.
