The Initiative for Better and Brighter Nigeria (IBBN) has issued a heartfelt plea to President Bola Tinubu, advocating for a significant reduction in government spending and a reevaluation of the cost of governance in Nigeria.
The organization has also urged the president, alongside members of the National Assembly and their affiliates, to reconsider their lavish lifestyles, which are often at the expense of the average Nigerian citizen.
During a press conference held in Jos, Plateau State, Prophet Isa El-Buba, the Convener of IBBN, emphasized the importance of demonstrating leadership and empathy towards the challenges faced by everyday Nigerians. He called on the president to take proactive steps in curtailing unnecessary government expenditures.
El-Buba stated, “I urge all Nigerians to persist in our collective quest for a brighter future, standing united against injustice, corruption, and the lack of accountability.”
He praised the peaceful protests that have taken place over the past few days, highlighting their commitment to a non-violent approach in advocating for change.
Despite the peaceful demonstrations, he expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of lives, reporting that over 40 individuals have been killed by security forces and state-sponsored thugs in various regions. “We stand in solidarity with those who have lost their lives fighting for a better Nigeria, where no individual holds greater power than the masses,” he affirmed.
The Convener further asserted that Nigerians will not tolerate oppressive policies from self-serving regimes. “Let it be clear that we are against any form of violence or property destruction. Our mission is to demand change while upholding the principles of non-violence.”
El-Buba questioned the disconnect between the government’s lavish spending and the dire conditions faced by the populace. “How can leaders live extravagantly while preaching sacrifice to citizens struggling to survive?” he asked, highlighting the pressing issues of justice, security, and food shortages.
He criticized President Tinubu’s recent speeches, which he deemed self-congratulatory and lacking in addressing the protesters’ specific needs.
“His failure to acknowledge the urgent need to cut excessive government spending is concerning. The president must lead by example and make sacrifices for the greater good,” he insisted.
The IBBN outlined specific demands, including the cancellation of exorbitant expenditures such as ₦150 billion for a presidential jet and ₦13.5 billion for renovations of the presidential villa. El-Buba called for a cabinet reshuffle, urging the inclusion of skilled professionals who can effectively address the nation’s challenges.
He further advocated for the reinstatement of a corruption-free fuel subsidy to alleviate hunger and poverty or the empowerment of local refineries to reduce fuel prices. “As a major oil producer, Nigeria should not face ongoing fuel shortages or exorbitant prices impacting food and transportation costs,” he stated.
Lastly, El-Buba urged President Tinubu to support the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in investigating high-profile corruption cases, believing that tackling corruption is crucial for unlocking Nigeria’s potential and ensuring equitable resource distribution.
